Today's prompts from Write Better Poetry and NaPoWriMo: (1) Write a "number" poem, and (2) "write a poem that [...] uses alliteration and punning. See if you can’t work in references to at least one word you have trouble spelling, and one that you’ve never quite been able to perfectly remember the meaning of."
I'll work on a "number" poem later, but for now, here's my poem in response to the second prompt. There is a some alliteration scattered through it and some fun with words, but I don't think I worked in any puns. I did have fun writing it though.
Onomatopoeia
I almost never spell it right the first time.
I think I have it and—BUZZ!—I’m wrong!
So I have to dig out my dictionary—
BAM!—all two thousand pages on the table,
flip, flip, flip, halfway through,
and SMACK my forehead—so many Os
Sounding like “ah”s, and a soft T?
And what’s with “poe” pronounced “pee”?
Would the writer of "The Raven" want to be known
as Edgar Allan Pee? No wonder I never
get it right. I THUMP the tome shut,
and correct my spelling. (Three errors in one word!)
There’s no mnemonic trick for this one,
Like with “separate.” (You can always find “a rat”…)
If only there were some foolproof system
To help us spell error-free, some algarhythm—
No, that’s not right—flip, flip, flip—ALGORITHM.
Am I using that word corrrectly? Or is it “logarithm”?
It doesn’t help that they’re anagrams of each other.
I’m overthinking again—*SIGH*.
